TORONTO – Already considered by many critics to be his best film to date, Past Life is the latest from acclaimed Israeli director Avi Nesher (The MatchmakerTurn Left at the End of the World). After premiering at TIFF last year to critical acclaim, Past Life is returning to Toronto on July 14 for a full theatrical run at the Cineplex Canada Square Cinemas, from Unobstructed View (formerly Video Services Corp.)

Set in 1977 and based on a true story, Past Life is a spellbinding tale that tracks the trans-European odyssey of two sisters as they try to unravel a wartime mystery that has cast a shadow on their lives. Sephi is an  aspiring composer, determined to succeed in the male-dominated classical music world. Her older sister Nana is a scandal-sheet journalist and aspiring playwright. The daughters of Holocaust survivors, the two are bent on uncovering the truth behind a dark family secret.

The film was inspired by Dr. Baruch Milch’s book Can Heaven Be Void?, which is based on a diary he kept during WWII, and the extremely difficult decisions he had to face during this time. The son of Holocaust survivors, writer/director Nesher also has a personal connection to the story.

“My parents survived the Holocaust – that is a fact. But how they managed to come out of the inferno that has killed six million Jews – I will never know for sure. There is the official version but there are also rumours,” says Director Nesher. “I have never dared ask my parents about this particular part of their history and my very reluctance to do so has always troubled me.”
